એક એવી ઉત્તમ વાત સાંભળો જે અત્યંત મૂલ્યવાન છે: તમારામાંથી કોઈ પણ વ્યક્તિ એવી વાત ન કરે જે તેની સાથે સંબંધિત ન હોય, અને જે વાત તેની સાથે સંબંધિત હોય તેમાં પણ બોલવાનું ટાળે, જ્યાં સુધી તેને તેના માટે યોગ્ય અવસર ન મળે. કેટલાય વક્તાઓ એવા હોય છે કે તેઓ અયોગ્ય સમયે બોલીને પોતાના જ શબ્દોથી પોતાને નુકસાન પહોંચાડે છે.

એક જ્ઞાની પુરુષને પૂછવામાં આવ્યું, 'ઈશ્વરે જે વસ્તુઓ બનાવી છે તેમાં કઈ વસ્તુ સર્વશ્રેષ્ઠ છે?' તો તેમણે કહ્યું, 'વાણી.' પછી પૂછવામાં આવ્યું, 'ઈશ્વરે જે વસ્તુઓ બનાવી છે તેમાં કઈ વસ્તુ સૌથી ખરાબ છે?' તેમણે કહ્યું, 'વાણી.' આગળ કહ્યું, 'વાણીથી જ ચહેરા ઊજળા થાય છે અને વાણીથી જ ચહેરા કાળા થાય છે.'

A wise man was asked, 'Among all the things God has created, which is the best?' He replied, 'Speech.' Then he was asked, 'Among all the things God has created, which is the worst?' He replied, 'Speech.' He further said, 'It is through speech that faces brighten, and through speech that faces darken.'
