દંભી વ્યક્તિના ચાર લક્ષણો (નિશાનીઓ) છે: ૧. જ્યારે તેની પાસે કોઈ અન્ય વ્યક્તિ હોય ત્યારે તે ઈશ્વરના કાર્ય માટે ખૂબ ઉત્સાહી રહે છે, ૨. જ્યારે તે એકલો હોય ત્યારે આળસ કરે છે, ૩. પોતાના દરેક કાર્યમાં તારીફ અને પ્રશંસા મેળવવા માટે આતુર રહે છે, અને ૪. પોતાના વર્તનને (બાહ્ય રીતે) સુંદર બતાવવાનો પ્રયાસ કરે છે.

There are four signs of an ostentatious person: 1. When someone else is with them, they are very enthusiastic in working for God, 2. When they are alone, they are lazy, 3. In all their deeds, they are eager to receive praise and admiration, and 4. They strive to make their outward behavior appear pleasing.

માણસનું સત્કાર્ય ઉપર કાયમ રહેવું તે કાર્ય કરતાં વધારે શ્રેષ્ઠ છે. પૂછવામાં આવ્યું: સત્કાર્ય ઉપર કાયમ રહેવું શું છે? તો ઉત્તર મળ્યો: એક માણસ ભલાઈના ઈરાદાથી ઈશ્વર — જે એકલો છે અને જેનો કોઈ ભાગીદાર નથી — ના માર્ગમાં સંપત્તિ ખર્ચે છે તો તેના માટે "ગુપ્ત કાર્ય" લખી દેવામાં આવે છે, પછી જો તે તેનો ઉલ્લેખ કરે છે તો તેને ભૂંસીને "જાહેર કાર્ય" લખી દેવામાં આવે છે, પછી જો તે ફરીથી તેનો ઉલ્લેખ કરે છે તો તેને પણ ભૂંસીને "દંભ (દેખાવ)" લખી દેવામાં આવે છે.

Preserving a good deed is harder than performing it. When asked what preserving a deed meant, he replied: A person spends wealth for the sake of God alone without partner, and it is recorded as a private deed; then he mentions it, so it is erased and recorded as a public deed; then he mentions it again, so it is erased and recorded as ostentation.
