Vanity has degrees. One of them is that a person's bad deeds are made to appear attractive to him, so he sees them as good, taking pride in them and thinking that he is doing well.
Indeed, the stubbornness of gluttony, the lethargy of luxury, the intoxication of fullness, and the pride of power are things that distance one from good deeds, make one sluggish, cause one to forget remembrance, and make one heedless of how near death is.
