જીભનો ઉપદ્રવ તલવારના પ્રહાર કરતાંય તીવ્ર હોય છે.

એક જ્ઞાની પુરુષને પૂછવામાં આવ્યું, 'ઈશ્વરે જે વસ્તુઓ બનાવી છે તેમાં કઈ વસ્તુ સર્વશ્રેષ્ઠ છે?' તો તેમણે કહ્યું, 'વાણી.' પછી પૂછવામાં આવ્યું, 'ઈશ્વરે જે વસ્તુઓ બનાવી છે તેમાં કઈ વસ્તુ સૌથી ખરાબ છે?' તેમણે કહ્યું, 'વાણી.' આગળ કહ્યું, 'વાણીથી જ ચહેરા ઊજળા થાય છે અને વાણીથી જ ચહેરા કાળા થાય છે.'
A wise man was asked, 'Among all the things God has created, which is the best?' He replied, 'Speech.' Then he was asked, 'Among all the things God has created, which is the worst?' He replied, 'Speech.' He further said, 'It is through speech that faces brighten, and through speech that faces darken.'
આ જીભ દરેક નેકી અને બદીની ચાવી છે, તેથી શ્રદ્ધાળુને જોઈએ કે તે પોતાની જીભ ઉપર મહોર લગાવે એવી જ રીતે કે જેવી રીતે તે તેનાં સોનાં અને ચાંદી પર મહોર લગાવે છે.
This tongue is the key to all good and evil; therefore, a believer ought to place a seal upon their tongue just as they seal their gold and silver.
